A Legacy Continued
The University of Illinois Alumni Veterans evolved out of the Illini Veterans student organization, which was founded in late 2008 by a small group of veterans returning to college after completing their military service. Before the Illini Veterans, there had not been a permanent student group for veterans at the state’s flagship university, though there have been several incarnations of veterans groups, including a post-World War II student group also known as the Illini Veterans, before it became an American Legion post.
Once the founding group of modern-day Illini Veterans began graduated and made their way into industry and civil service, there became a need to foster continuing ties to the university, the veteran students and other veteran alumni. In late 2015, the alumni organized to create an interim board of directors and formalized as an affiliate of the University of Illinois Alumni Association in order to launch a wider effort to reach out and connect more alumni with military backgrounds.
